Five Who?

Many people have heard of the wildly popular chain in the west known as In N Out. Only two states east you have a growing chain of fast food burgers and fries by the name of Five Guys.

If you don’t have a Five Guy’s location near you then you may express this curiousity by asking, “what the hell is Five Guys?”

The fact is that Five Guys is so wildly popular and so successful that even though they don’t have many stores currently, within the next few years, they will be taking over pretty much every major city in the US.

In fact, according to Forbes, Five Guys was the fastest growing chain in the US in 2013. As of December 2014, they had 1,157 restaurants across the US. This is only a tiny fraction of total restaurant chains in the US, but it’s actually a much bigger chain than most people realize.

Five Guys was started in 1986 in Arlington, Virginia. They have maintained their cult following to this day. In 2008, Five Guys was rated the “second-best burger” chain by Entrepreneur magazine.

My Visit to Five Guys

Without hesitation, I’d have to say that Five Guys is the best burger restaurant in the country. I’m not sure if it’s in the same ballpark as In-N-Out, the West Coast chain, but if you haven’t had either, try both and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Five Guys and In-N-Out have about the same number of locations, (In-N-Out in about 15 states, Five Guys in about 27 – I think) and they’re very close in size and taste.

Walking into a restaurant is hard enough but how about eating a burger in a shopping cart. Well I was in Vegas with a friend and he has a liking for the Five Guys burgers and we thought we should just make the purchase and indulge ourselves on our late night stoney stoneder trip to the Casino.

We walked out of the bar, full from shooters, and did the fifteen lap walk to Five Guys. The people walking up the street, all of a sudden, were lined up going to this joint. The wait went by fast enough, as I was buying time both eating my free peanuts and checking out the pretty young hostesses that were laying out their stuff on the sidewalk.

Five Guys Burgers and Fries (Five Guys) prides itself on the fact that all of the chain’s burgers are cooked to order. To ensure quality, every burger is reportedly cooked in 100% peanut oil and may take up to 20 minutes to prepare. Therefore, if you order a burger at Five Guys, you may want to make sure that you have ample time to remain where you are until your burger is ready to be served.

Five Guys Menu

One thing you will hear when you visit or read about the stats is how Five Guys Burgers and Fries uses fresh patties and out shines the rest of the fast food competition, Main competition is easily In N Out, the cult favorite from California.

Five Guys serves specialty hamburgers and lets you build your own burger just the way you like it! You can choose from a wide variety of hot and cold burgers and hotdogs, each with different toppings. You can also order your fries crispy or soft, with cheese or bacon on top, or in a cup. And here is something most people don’t know. at Five Guys you get fries with your burger but at In-N-Out they don’t! That’s right. It’s just burgers, that’s it.

Five Guys are most famous for their burgers, but that’s not their only offering. You can order hot dogs, sandwiches, veggie sandwiches, chicken sandwiches, vegetarian sandwiches, and hot dogs, along with various sides like fries, peanuts, and sodas.

The menu feels a little bit incomplete, which is probably why the restaurant insists on selling peanuts along with its main fare. The peanuts, however, do not come with a price tag.

If you’re looking for smaller prices without compromising on quality, the Five Guys secret menu is for you.

Do note that Five Guys is not open 24 hours a day, so you will have to pick the right time to visit. The Five Guys nutrition information will help you in making health-conscious meal choices.

Ready: Two of America’s Best Burgers Are Going To Battle

If you live in the USA and you’re a burger lover, you’re probably aware of the rivalry between the two most famous burger joints: In N Out Burger and Five Guys.

The fuss began in 2012 when Zagat deemed Five Guys the best burger restaurant in America and In N Out took their place at second position. In N Out took it as a challenge and a fight between the two restaurants began. In the years that followed, many burger shops and reviewers picked sides in the battle.

The rivalry gained so much notice, that Five Guys even created a special item for it: the double-double versus the double-double-double. In the battle between Five Guys and In N Out, which one will win? Is there really a big difference between the two?

We think it’s worth mentioning that we have both restaurants in our neighborhood. And until recently, we both really thought that only burger really matters when comparing the two. But after taking a deeper dive into the menu, it became clear that pitp and fries are not the only differences between Five Guys and In N Out. Read on to learn more about the differences between Five Guys and In N Out and decide for yourself who serves the better burger.

Five Guys Propaganda

Although I have never actually eaten at a Five Guys before, I have heard quite a bit about them. Multiple posters on Craigslist say that Five Guys is the best around, and although that might be a little bit of a stretch, I would assume they would be a cut above the rest.

The thing is, in my experience, adverising companies and writers, who are paid to write about restaurants, tend to give out five star ratings and praise for the restaurants in question. As a result, many of us who are unaware of the advertising methods of these companies, just begin to believe that the opinions of these writers are true, and as a result, the company gets a lot of free publicity. If those of you who have been to Five Guys do admit that it is one of the best burger joints, I would say that that is probably correct due to the amount of free advertising it has had.

However, I have to say that I prefer In and out over Five Guys. I know that “In and Out” has been around for considerably less time than Five Guys, but I have been to In and Out many times and I have not been to Five Guys once. Also, In and out has a lot more to offer in terms of menu items. Five Guys burger are a little less extravagant.

Five Guys Taste Test

Let me just start out by saying I am a very critical person. I hate being lied to or feeling like I was swindled or cheated. So when it comes to fast food and eating good for you I know that it is not going to be a healthy choice. I also know that it is up to you to have the best healthy fast food options possilble. We all love a good burger at least every now and then, but with the rising prices at restaurants and at meal time at home people are trying to find good tasting, healthier choices, where do you go?

Don’t worry I’ve got you covered, now let’s get started on comparing these popular options. Let’s start with a little science, In N out has a health score of 27 (Scale 0-100) and a rating of 41 (Scale 0-100) for taste. Five Guys has a Health Score of 40 and a Taste Rating of 43. These actually sound like similar scores, but when you consider that Five Guys has burgers that have 1534 calories and 95 grams of fat and In N Out has 464 calories with 49 grams of fat, yes you do make a healthier choice at In N Out.

Five Guys Burgers

Vs. In N Out.

On the surface, these two hamburger chains appear to have a lot in common. They’re both pretty new, since Five Guys was founded in 1986 and In N Out in 1948. They’re both regional. Five Guys has expanded to over 900 locations across the US, with plans for international expansion. In N Out has about 330 locations, only in the western US. They’re both well-regarded for their burgers, fries, and milkshakes. And they’re both so different from the big fast-food chains like McDonald’s that “better” appears to be their main marketing angle.

The truth is that they’re both good, but very different, burger experiences. Comparing Five Guys and In N Out isn’t entirely straightforward, because the two chains present different styles of western-style burgers, with different amounts of emphasis on the basics (cheese, lettuce, pickles, and so on), and different ways of going about making your order. So, which is better? It depends.

What do Others Say?

Whether you love Five Guys or In N Out is ultimately up to you (and your taste buds!). But one thing we can all agree on is that both are pretty awesome! So, which one do you prefer?

We’re pretty confident that the Internet got the best comparison for each of these two chains!

Real Men Know Burgers

In-N-Out on Facebook

Weiss had to get some In-N-Out burgers for the West Coast burger chain. As he told Justin Halpern, author of “Sh*t My Dad Says,” “Once you get In-N-Out, you're going to wonder why you've been eating all those other hamburgers."

Eater has praised In-N-Out for its simple menu. “The only thing In-N-Out can do for you is to make a hamburger and fries. And they are extremely good at doing that,” they say. That’s the beauty of In-N-Out ‑ the burgers are simple, so the quality comes from the meat, toppings and buns. There’s nothing extraneous to get in the way of your taste buds.

In-N-Out is the underdog (or the underdog-est creature?). It’s smaller than most of the other chains. They wouldn’t consider adding new menu items. It’s not swanky. And you can’t get it in Boston.

In-N-Out. You Had Me at Hello

In N’ Out, a simply sandwich with some french fries on the side, at first glance, does not seem like the best burger you’ll ever have. However, believe me it is. From its simple menu to its fresh chopped tomatoes and hand-mashed patties on a fresh bun, you’ll love it.

The two main reasons I love it are its simple menu and freshness of the food. I can walk in and out in less than 10 minutes without having a heart attack from ordering something other than the 4 options they have on the menu. It’s fast food, but it’s definitely made to order, and my In N’ Out has never disappointed.

Even though it’s not greasy, the burger is still tasty. The secret is in the ingredients – fresh, simple, quality ingredients. They even press their own hamburger buns.
