What is a Blog Anyway?

A blog is a type of website that contains a chronological series of mostly linked or related content. It’s also known as an “electronic magazine”. Blogs are typically organized around subjects that the author is interested in or knowledgeable about.

So why start a blog.

Blogs can be a simple way to create a content based website and a great way to entice new potential clients.

A blog not only provides a great way to showcase some of your creative writing and unique ideas, it’s also the perfect tool to give you your own voice. A blog is not only a single portfolio piece, but it’s a platform for multiple works of importance.

Blogging is very easy to understand, interactive, and it’s fun, unlike a lot of other content platforms such as your standard Facebook or Twitter account.

Should You Start a Blog?

A lot of people have been asking themselves this question. In this post I’ll break down everything from how a blog works to some of the basics of blogging, then I’ll give you some statistics on some popular blogs so you can see if pursuing this online endeavor is something you should pursue.

Important Things to Note

Starting a blog is scary. It’s hard, and it takes time to do and build. It’s frustrating, because it takes time to do and build. But there are a lot of advantages to blogging. Just a few of them are:

Blogging allows you to connect with people who feel the same way you do.

Blogging gives you a voice that lasts long after you are gone.

Blogging makes you a better writer (always a plus!).

Writing a blog post helps you remember something that you have learned.

Blogging keeps you motivated to reach your goals.

Blogging gives you the opportunity to say something to the world.

If blogging sounds like something that you need to be doing, these tips will help get you started.

How to Start a Blog: A Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Pick a blog name and a niche.

When creating your blog, you should set up a URL that’s easy to remember. That will be your blog’s name.

If you want to make your blog popular, it’s important to pick the right topic. If you’re a news junkie, your topic can be the latest in pop culture news, sports news, or world news. If you want to make money with your blog, you should choose topics that will attract the type of customers you’re targeting.

You should also choose a niche that you can write about in-depth. If you choose a general topic, such as “lifestyle”, it will be difficult to attract a large audience.

Step 2: Register your domain.

Once you have a solid domain name in mind, youll need to register the website with a domain hosting company. Do your research though, because not all domain hosting companies are created equally. nCage is one of the best hosting companies you can buy your .com domains and .net domains from. They have low prices and excellent customer support.

Step 3: Pick a blog host.

You have two options when it comes to choosing a blog host.

The first is self-hosting. You’d use your own web hosting subscription to do this. The downside is that you’ll have to do all the programming and maintenance by yourself.

A better option is to use a blogging platform. Blogging platforms give you all the tools you’ll need to start a professional-looking blog with little or no prior knowledge. When you use a blogging platform, all you have to do is write.

There are lots of great blogging platforms out there. To help you find one that’s right for you, keep the following things in mind:

{1}. Are you tech savvy? If you’re tech savvy, go for a self-hosted blog.
{2}. Can you handle the expenses? You will have to pay for your own web hosting. Depending on your level of expertise, you may also have to pay for web design.
{3}. Do you need an existing following? If you already have a big fan base, it makes sense to start a blog with a name that’s already familiar. If you’re new to the blogging world, however, a blogging platform such as Blogger or WordPress is a better option.

Step 4: Get your hosting account off the ground.

Step 5: Connect your domain and host.

To set up your blog, the information you’ll need is: your host’s username, password and database access credentials and your domain name.

First of all, sign into your control panel. Depending on your host, there may be different options, but you’ll probably have an option for cPanel. Click on that.

You’ll see a window pop up that looks something like this:

Once you have this information, login to your host. If you’re using BlueHost, login to your cPanel.

You’ll see a screen that shows your account name & description, email contact, and a list of available services.

Click the “Domain Management” option. You’ll see a screen that allows you to do things like: Purchase a new domain

Create Name Servers

If you’d prefer, you can “manage” your domain directly from here. Since we registered our domain in Step 3, let’s go directly to step 6!

Step 6: Build your website.

Step 7: Design your website.

Now that you have your domain name, you need a website. And the easiest way to get a professional looking website is to use a service called WordPress.

For those of you who don’t know what WordPress is, it is the most popular and easy to use website design software service online.

It allows you to easily build a fully functional, mobile-friendly website that you can customize and use to create your very own blog!

Now you do not have to be a computer whiz to use it. Once you know the basics of how to use a computer and the internet, you will be able to create a professional looking website in as little as 30 minutes.

To get started with it, you can use the video tutorials to learn how to use WordPress.

You could also subscribe to one of their monthly plans to access online videos and tutorials. They offer customer support as well.

This is the easiest way to get a professional looking blog. Some bloggers even pay professionals to design the website for them. If you are not a designer, or have a limited budget, then I suggest you go with this option.

Step 8: Write and publish content.

The only way to make a blog successful is to make it active and engage with the audience. You have to post and publish contents regularly.

As we discussed before, it’s important to have a blog strategy. Pick a topic you are passionate about and start searching for possible blogs on that topic. You can also use a content suggestion algorithm to find trending topics. With a fresh topic or keyword, answer the gaps on what the audience is looking for. Make sure that your content is accurate, comprehensive and concise.

When writing a post, don’t forget that your target audience is made up of a wide variety of people who all have different goals.

Step 9: Promote your blog and get ready to earn money.

This is where you have to be even more patient. It takes time for the content to build up organically, and for viewers to come back. But, like many blogs, you can help it along by offering a free PDF or piece of information in exchange for an email address.

Use a tool like Aweber or Feedburner to get people onto your list and keep in touch with them. They can also help you to build a proper email marketing campaign.

Smart bloggers use affiliate programs to monetize their site. What it means is that they can make money even if they don’t sell any products directly. Instead, they just refer them to other sites who will pay them a commission for every customer they send their way.

By signing up with affiliate programs such as CJ, Amazon or Share a Sale, or some others, you can make a commission for every sale you send their way.

The trick is to make sure you only promote products that your audience would be interested. You need to test the products and see if they are worth promoting. You will waste a lot of time and money promoting all kinds of rubbish in the hope that just one or two will make you some money.

If you are just starting out, I’d stick with having your blog as your main source of income, and promoting affiliate products on the side.

Tips for Success

When you start blogging, you inevitably discover that there’s a lot of information – some of it conflicting – running around about everything from the content of your blog to the way it’s organized to the name you’ve chosen.

It’s pretty easy to get overwhelmed by it all, especially for beginners.

How long will it take me to earn money blogging?

As with most other careers, you can earn money as a blogger, but it takes time and a strong work ethic to be successful. While many bloggers come out of the gate strong and make money from day one, the truth is that most sites will need time to grow in order to be profitable. You may make a few dollars here and there from affiliate sales and AdSense advertisements, but serious bloggers will need to build a personal brand and a following that trusts your content and will continue to visit your site.

There are plenty of ways to make money and start earning online, but blogging is hands down one of the most effective ways for a person just starting out to start making money. The dream of becoming a serious blogger and earning a large income may seem like a lofty one, but it is possible. You just might need to do a little more than you think in order to be successful.

How much does it cost to start a blog?

What you need to start a blog depends on what you want to accomplish. If you want to have a blog associated with your business, the equipment and software you need is going to differ from a blog that’s associated with your personal life.

Since blogging is so in demand right now, many websites and services are touting themselves as easy solutions for getting your own blog up and running. Some of these solutions can be truly easy to use and work great for those who have little or no experience with blogging. At the same time, there are others that have a steep learning curve and aren’t necessarily the best choices. As long as you know what you want, you can choose the blogging service that’s right for you.

How do I choose a blog niche that is profitable?

If you are reading this post, it most likely means that:

  • You are interested in a career as a blogger
  • You know that you need money to support your family and/or yourself
  • Believe that there are ways to make money from blogging and that you can be successful as blogger

You may have little experience with blogging.

Those seven steps are:

Choose a niche Write your blog post content! It is finally here, baby Set up your blog on Squarespace Choose a domain Buy your hosting Install WordPress on your hosting domain Final words

What do you do if you can’t find a domain name you like?

If you’re having a hard time finding a domain name, it’s okay – you’re not alone!

When my clients are trying to come up with a domain name for their new blog, they often find themselves stuck with a hard decision:

Do you find a domain name that meets the following conditions?

It’s the same name as your blog.

It’s a name that you like and is easy to spell and remember.

It’s available for purchase as a .com domain name.

It’s not ‘straigtjacketed’ by trademarks, copyrights, or designs.

It’s a domain name that you can live with for a long time.

It’s available with your web host.

Well, now there’s an easy way to find a domain name that fits all the above criteria – and in less time than you can imagine. Simply use a tool I call ‘the ’Big List’.

How do bloggers get paid?

Most bloggers are independent contractors, so they are not an employer. This makes it hard for most bloggers to have the kind of benefits and tax advantages enjoyed by the ‘real’ job holder. (Yes, of course, bloggers can still be employees, but that’s in a different league.)

The role of a blogger is to serve the readers, rather than function towards the interests of an employer. This means that a blogger is likely to be paid a one-time fee or a single time fee to write a particular article. But if the magazine is doing business as usual, you can be sure that your publisher will keep you coming back to serve his needs.

Usually, a blogger will start off with no strings attached. You get paid as soon as you have earned your first dollar. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t make money blogging for free. In fact, quite a few bloggers do.

Okay, now you know how bloggers get paid, the next question is: How do they make money? Let’s try looking at it from specific aspects, such as blog maintenance, building a community, or even product reviews.

What is affiliate marketing?

When people talk about affiliate marketing in their blogs, they are referring to an agreement that is between a merchant and an affiliate.

Affiliate marketing is a win-win proposition for both parties. Merchants involve affiliates in their businesses by giving them referral fees as payouts. Affiliates, on the other hand, promote merchants’ products and in exchange, they receive commission. It’s a perfect way of earning money online, and the best part is: it’s beginner friendly.

Should I start more than one blog to make more money?

There are two reasons why this might make sense:1. You want to build a brand, and you’re willing to invest time now to get greater opportunity later.

The thing to keep in mind is that building a brand takes time. You might be dreaming of selling your site in a few years, but selling a high-value brand is not an overnight thing. You might not even see it happen in your lifetime.

You have a niche blog that is getting traffic but isn’t bringing in the money that you want.

You’re never going to get rich on traffic alone. You’re going to need to find monetization strategies for your site.

It’s also a fact of life that different niches generate traffic at different rates. Some niches are really easy to drive traffic to. Others are more of a challenge. It doesn’t change the fact that you’re going to have to come up with a way to monetize the traffic that you drive.

What are the main benefits of blogging as a side hustle or business idea?

One of the great things about starting a blog as a side hustle or even as a full-time business is that it's an idea that most people can work into their life. You can blog while raising a family, blogging while working for someone else, or while starting or growing your own business.

Blogging is a platform that allows you to share your ideas with the online community.
